HITTING 0.333

HALL OF FAME

I love Masterclass.com.

It’s the best learning program I’ve been involved in for years. I study a lot, and this is by far the best format that I have ever used. I have no stock in them, no affiliate links, and I don’t know any of the founders. I’m just a fan.

So far I have studied:

  • Acting ~ Kevin Spacey
  • Writing ~ James Patterson
  • Screen writing ~ Aaron Sorkin
  • Performance ~ Usher

For $90 per Masterclass, it genuinely is an outstanding (and affordable) resource for anyone who wants to learn from the best.

The one common thread that unites each of the superstar teachers, in each of the lessons that I’ve completed, is FAILURE. All of them have failed more than they have succeeded. And if the best in the world fail that much, how much more are mere mortals like us destined to fail as we each try to make some small kind of dent in our corner of the world.

Aaron Sorkin had a great perspective in one of his lessons. He compared success to baseball (he wrote the screenplay for one of my favourite films Moneyball). We all like to succeed most of the time, but in baseball ~ if you only succeed ONE in every THREE at bats, you end up in the hall of fame. That means failing TWICE as often as you succeed. 33% success rate. Or if you’re a baseball fan – the equivalent of hitting 0.333.

I’m upset when I have one bad presentation every five or ten ~ I’m not sure how I’d cope if seven of every ten sucked!

It’s a nice perspective to keep.

It’s also slightly poetic that in another lesson by Usher – he spoke about the need to have a “pre-performance ritual“. Something you go through in order to get in the zone before you go and do your thing. All the best performers have one.

I’ve had one for quite a while that started out as a complete coincidence. It just so happened to feature on a playlist I was listening to immediately before a couple of the biggest keynotes I’d ever presented. So I started listening to that same song. Hall of Fame by Will.I.Am and The Script.

Cheesy? Yes.

But whatever pulls your strings, right?

Anyway. Great words. Solid emotion. And it reminds me why I do what I do. And I love that the title now also reminds me that it’s OK if I only hit 0.333.

Onwards…

Lyrics to Hall of Fame

Yeah, You could be the greatest
You can be the best
You can be the King Kong banging on your chest

You could beat the world
You could beat the war
You could talk to God, go banging on his door

You can throw your hands up
You can beat the clock
You can move a mountain
You can break rocks
You can be a master
Don’t wait for luck
Dedicate yourself and you gon’ find yourself

Standing in the hall of fame (yeah)
And the world’s gonna know your name (yeah)
‘Cause you burn with the brightest flame (yeah)
And the world’s gonna know your name (yeah)
And you’ll be on the walls of the hall of fame

You can go the distance
You can run the mile
You can walk straight through hell with a smile

You could be the hero
You could get the gold
Breaking all the records they thought, never could be broke

Do it for your people
Do it for your pride
How you ever gonna know if you never even try?

Do it for your country
Do it for your name
‘Cause there’s gonna be a day

When your, standing in the hall of fame (yeah)
And the world’s gonna know your name (yeah)
‘Cause you burn with the brightest flame (yeah)
And the world’s gonna know your name (yeah)
And you’ll be on the walls of the hall of fame

Be a champion, be a champion, be a champion, be a champion

On the walls of the hall of fame

Be students, be teachers
Be politicians, be preachers
Be believers, be leaders
Be astronauts, be champions
Be truth seekers

Be students, be teachers
Be politicians, be preachers
Be believers, be leaders
Be astronauts, be champions

Standing in the hall of fame (yeah, yeah, yeah)
And the world’s gonna know your name (yeah, yeah, yeah)
‘Cause you burn with the brightest flame (yeah, yeah, yeah)
And the world’s gonna know your name (yeah, yeah, yeah)
And you’ll be on the walls of the hall of fame

You could be the greatest
(You can be a champion)
You can be the best
(You can be a champion)
You can be the King Kong banging on your chest
(You can be a champion)
You could beat the world
(You can be a champion)
You could beat the war
(You can be a champion)
You could talk to God, go banging on his door
(You can be a champion)

You can throw your hands up
(You can be a champion)
You can beat the clock
(You can be a champion)
You can move a mountain
(You can be a champion)
You can break rocks
(You can be a champion)

You can be a master
(You can be a champion)
Don’t wait for luck
(You can be a champion)
Dedicate yourself and you gon’ find yourself
(You can be a champion)
Standing in the hall of fame
(You can be a champion)
